Building a Kaleidoscope - Hands-on activity. Light & multiple reflections

Building a kaleidoscope is a fun activity that complements the unit on light and waves. A kaleidoscope demonstrates the principle of multiple reflections. I used reflective paper instead of mirrors to avoid potential accidents in my project, and it worked very well. Just make sure to fold the paper into an equilateral triangular prism shape. This activity takes about 90 minutes and allows time to review light behaviors, including multiple reflections. After students finish building their kaleido

Teaching style

I believe that education is a flexible journey where students and teachers collaborate and share in learning, enriching each other in the process. My teaching style is hands-on because there’s nothing better than active engagement to foster deeper learning. I’m not referring to elaborate or resource-intensive activities—sometimes it’s simply guiding students to discover from their own surroundings. Teaching with passion every day, giving my best, and believing in my students... that’s my teaching style. "Teacher, you can only enlighten lamps if you carry fire in your heart." — Gabriela Mistral, Chilean poet

My own education history

I have had 16 different jobs in my life. Some of these jobs pushed me outside my comfort zone, while others helped me flourish and brought out the best in me. Teaching has been one of the most fulfilling activities of my life. Back in my home country, Chile, I studied my first career: aquaculture. After working on a fish farm, I had the opportunity to mentor families in rural areas on how to grow fish using the small creeks on their properties. This job showed me the tremendous impact education can have on improving people's quality of life. These families were able to enhance their nutrition and develop a side business thanks to their small farms. After becoming a mom, I pursued my second career and became a teacher. I taught aquaculture at a technical school for 10 years, and during this time, I discovered my passion for teaching. When I moved to Canada, I faced challenges learning the language and finding a job. During that difficult period, I realized I was stronger than I had ever imagined. After becoming a permanent resident, I decided to return to teaching. After several years of hard work and study, I obtained my teaching degree and I am now a teacher in British Columbia.

Additional biographical information

I am a happy and optimistic person. I’m the mom of two amazing young men, Javier and Sebastian. I’m also an entrepreneur in the crafting world, running a small business called ā€œArte y Lana,ā€ which means ā€œart and wool.ā€ I create original designs, including the coziest slippers made from wool and sheepskin (check out ā€œArte y Lana talleresā€ on Facebook). I also love drawing, coloring, walking in nature, taking photographs, swimming, and practicing yoga. Recently, my sons introduced me to bouldering—I’m doing my best considering I’m 50 years old, and it’s so much fun! 😊
