Integrated STEM & Close Reading | Groundhog Day STEM Challenge
In this Groundhog Day themed STEM challenge, students figure out multiple ways to pop a "groundhog" up out of his "burrow," and then they must accurately measure his shadow using centimeters. This activity challenges students to call on most of the Standards of Mathematical Practices, as well as to write clearly for a specific purpose. It puts accurate measurement and data recording into real-life practice. Groundhog Day is an opportunity to discuss hibernation, seasons, and folklore. Here's

Teaching style
Most of my nearly 30 years in education have been spent teaching students in grades 3, 4, and 5. I was an Instructional Coach for several years, but my heart always brings me back into the classroom. I recently retired from teaching Gifted self-contained 5th grade in sunny Arizona.
