Quest- Metric Missions- Reading a Graduated Cylinder

Challenge your students to record the volume of objects from graduated cylinder readings. Within the game world storyline, Einstein has locked away a Sir Isaac Newton's armor in a safe. In order to find the safe's combination, students will take their values from the graduated cylinder readings. This quest includes three separate variations for differentiation. Students can jig-saw the different versions as a group to solve the puzzle. Can your students unlock the safe?! Students will be able to

Foldable- Observations and Inferences

Review nature of science concepts with this observations and inferences foldable! Students can have trouble identifying the basic terms related to scientific investigations, but this foldable will allow them to define each one and provide a helpful example at the same time. Your class will then display improvement when it comes to identifying observations and inferences. These notes come with easy to follow instructions and a key defining each of the three concepts so that you can maximize the e

Foldable- Experimental Design

Review variables and the basic structure of experimental design with this Experimental Design Foldable! Students can have trouble identifying the differences between independent variables, dependent variables, and constants within an experiment, but this foldable will allow them to define each term and examples from specific experiment examples at the same time. Your class will then display improvement when it comes to identifying variables, experimental groups, and control groups. This include

Quest- Metric Missions- That Equals What?

Challenge your students to review length, mass, and volume with the metric system in this race against the clock to save a poisoned Sir Isaac Newton! In this quest, students must complete three stations; one for length, one for mass, and one for volume. At each station, students review the basic units and tools for measuring that quantity while also comparing the English unit with the Metric unit for that quantity. Students who achieve this in shorter amounts of time earn additional extra credit

Quest- Metric Missions- Reading a Triple Beam Balance

Challenge your students to record the mass of objects from triple beam balance readings. Within the game world storyline, Einstein has locked away a map in a safe. In order to find the safe's combination, students will take their values from the triple beam balance readings. This quest includes six separate variations for differentiation. Can your students unlock the safe?! Students will be able to demonstrate skills related to these learning targets: I can use tools to measure and describe the

Foldable- States of Matter

Review states of matter and kinetic molecular theory with this States of Matter Foldable! Students can have trouble identifying the differences between solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas, but this foldable will allow them to define each term and sketch examples at the same time. Your class will then display improvement when it comes to understanding how samples of matter can change as they are heated and cooled. These notes come with easy to follow instructions and a key defining each term so t

Teaching style

For the last seven years I have created and implemented a Game-Based design approach to 8th grade general science. In addition to this, I have utilized Universal Design protocols and have incorporated aspects of the Flipped Classroom as well. My approach to education focuses on kinesthetic learners with project-based approaches. Underlying PBIS initiatives have been employed in my classroom as a companion to my teaching style.

Awards & shining teacher moments

2016 William's Teacher of the Year Award from Wilmington City Schools.

Additional biographical information

See what my current students are using on my weebly site at hellmund.weebly.com. This is the main resource they use for their 8th grade science game curriculum where students have created gamertags, character avatars, earn gold, have life points, and earn experience for the work they do! They can view the shop where they can spend gold for game cards and so much more! My pinterest can be found at: www.pinterest.com/HellmundScience I post examples of student work and things I have incorporated into my gamified curriculum.
