A great note sheet to teach students how to SHOW the reader a moment. The graphic organizer chart is organized to build an understanding of how authors explode moments for readers. The note sheet includes a chart that has a dull sentence, a revised sentence, a writing strategy, and an explanation of HOW the author did this. A great tool to prep student for a middle school literary analysis project. Students can use the slides to brainstorm elements from their stories/books. Students can create a slideshow (one per reading) to submit OR use this to as a prewrite before a traditional comparitive essay or analysis.

This is my favorite test prep activity and has never failed me. Students take on the role of lawyers and in groups, receive confidential folders with "clients" who are either guilty or not guilty of bad writing. In each folder, students will receive a photo of their client, a sample Research Simulation Task (but this can be used with ANY writing) and a rubric to score. Help your students be successful with their DBQ and Mini Q writing tasks. Use this template to help them brainstorm their thesis and reasons as well as extract text evidence necessary. The document is geared towards a three body paragraph essay, can easily add a box for more paragraphs.

These are some helpful tips for teachers to use to restructure existing assessments so they become more literacy based. The literacy standards specific to the content areas of social studies & science have existed since the common core was first adopted, the purpose is to make our students 21st Century learners. These HOW -TO adjustments can take your assessments from basic content recall to more critical thinking.
This note sheet uses the acronym IDEAS [infer, define, example, antonyms, synonyms] to help students remember the different types of context clues. Each example includes a sentence and LOOK FOR tip. Great to pair with textbook reading and teaching students to look for clues and patterns in nonfiction and fiction text.
