I use these task cards as students are working with place value activities in small groups. These depth and complexity questions have students thinking about place value like they never have before, including how it's changed over time and place value's importance in our daily lives.

Students compete in battleship using whole and decimal place values.

This project gives students real world scenarios on budgeting and following specific directions. Students will be adding money to find costs of ingredients to make different Thanksgiving dishes and determining how they can stay within a given budget.

In this project, students will be researching data to determine how many movies were made from 2020 to 2024. Students will be inferencing external factors that could have caused the changes in the number of movie releases each year (such as covid). Students will also create a pictograph and bar graph to represent their data.

Students will be practicing converting improper fractions to mixed numbers while practicing reading recipes. This reaches across disciplines because students are practicing with procedural texts as well as applying math. Students will also be answering depth and complexity questions using the recipe.

This project is for second grade or higher level first grade. It involves looking through toy ads, looking at items they wish to purchase, calculating what coin values they could use to build the price and even generating their own one-step word problems for these items.

Students will research the amount of gold medals won by 5 different countries in the 2024 Olympics. Students will create a labeled bar graph with the data and then write an addition word problem and subtraction word problem to match their graph data.

Students can choose whichever activities they wish, as long as they reach the point value of your choosing. This menu allows students to research and get creative with the planets and our solar system.

Students will practice using traits and characteristics of 2D and 3D shapes by giving clues for students to identify a shape. The trick is, they cannot use the words on the cards for that given shape! They have to come up with other clues to help students identify the shape!

Students practice identifying different parts of speech by reading sentences and determining how the underline word is used. I have students explain their thinking by writing their choices in their journals.

These short answer comprehension questions focus on author's use of foreshadowing, theme, figurative language, and dialogue.

This is a prefix sort based on the prefixes re and and pre. Students can sort words based on prefix and then write the definition.

This menu allows students to have the power of choice while digging deeper into 2D and 3D shape attributes and their uses in the real world.

Students will be creating a business and having to solve multi-step problems when creating it.

As students read through different poems, they can use these task cards to deepen their understanding.

Students can use different printed texts to read and determine the text structure in centers.

These riddles will have students thinking in deep and complex ways. The riddles give students hints based on parts of speech, decoding skills, real life examples, and more.

When students are studying animal traits for survival, you can use these depth and complexity questions for students to answer after participating in the coffee filter gill experiment. These questions will have students thinking about gills in a whole new light and connecting gill function to their lives.

This a sort based on the oi and oy patterns and sound. Students can sort the words based on pattern, number of sounds and syllables, write the words in complete sentences and even identify the rules of when to use oi and oy.

This a contraction sort based on "am", "have", "is", and "will". Students can sort the words based on contraction, write the words in complete sentences and write the two words that make up the contraction.
