Leads students through a series of composition exercises: 1. Pick song (I let students pick folk songs from lesson books or you could write in a song to use with all students) 2. Change the notes 3. Change the rhythms 4. Own variation Theme and Variation go on the final copy Final compositions could be photographed and recorded to make a concert slide show of student work. Great way to show off students, engage parents during pre-show warmup, and show the importance of music education.

Students can be 'detectives' and follow directions using the acronyms CSI to remember what to watch out for in their music. To make the sheet even more helpful at home you can double side this page with a fingering chart for ease of use.
