These pages can be used various ways. I've used them as a whole class activity. Students each have a slice of paper with a simple sentence. I have the new super sentences. Who's match?
Race. Students must find the two simple sentences to match before the timer runs out.
As a small group students group the sentences together.
The first and easiest use of the mat is to help students to use connectives in their writing. I actually score their writing when we focus on connectives. This however opens the risk of over use.
Another way to use it is for students to sit in pairs and make up sentences including one of the connectives and collecting counters for the words that they use. The trick is to make it make sense.
The file includes the same mat but in three difference sizes. A4 A5 A6.
Change simple sentences into super sentences. Sentences are missing full stops to show that they are not completed yet. They are also in green to show that there may need to be some changes to punctuation. Sentences can be used either as pairs or as a whole to make a short story. Most sentences have two or more options. Connectives are on pink to fit with vcop wall displays.

I have used these as a hunt. Students have to highlight the connectives in each sentence. They can also level the sentences, add commas, change them slightly. They can be used as examples or cut and put back together.

For the students that just don't seem to be getting it. Sometimes teaching the tricks are the best way for them. These are ideas that I have used throughout my teaching that have actually worked.

A rubric for the use of scientific language covered in a light unit assessment clip.
I set my students a group assessment task of completing an engaging YouTube clip including demonstrations. The video was to be 2 minutes long, with anything between 1min30 and 2min30 receiving
full marks. The rubric was used to keep the students on task and to ensure they covered all topics covered.
Made for a Gr 5/6 class however could use for older students.

A selection of 36 words all about the life cycle of plants. Including simple language such as seed and flower and moving right up to hilum and cotyledons. Ready to cut and laminate, also includes a page of cards where you can add your own words.
Two pages. First page is sample sentences with connectives and page second page is a grid to tick the words as you find them. This can be used in many different ways. We use it in connectives hunts in books, to record our own writing success and also as a class to see how many connectives we use during a lesson. Can also be used while building oral language / vocab. skills.
A simple rewards chart that I have used with a special needs boy in science. I place a picture of him in the blank space. We pin it up and he adds a pin when he achieves certain behaviours. Eg. Arriving happy and ready to learn, listening to instructions, changing a mindset, etc
All pages are the same chart, just variations of the student included to allow you to choose the one that best suits the student/s you are working with.
