Haiku Planning Sheet

Haikus are a great way to cover another culture, creative writing, poetry, the writing process, and the Six Traits! This planning sheet allows the students to work on Word Choice by first brainstorming colorful words for their Haikus, and then they can write three drafts below. There are cherry blossoms on the worksheet because we discussed Japan and its cherry blossom trees, so that was the inspiration for our Haikus (see Blossoming Haikus Unit Plan). Haiku Six Traits of Writing Checklist

This checklist was a great way to keep the students on task throughout the unit (see Blossoming Haikus Unit Plan)! It helped make them aware of the Six Traits and how they pertain to Haikus. The students also knew exactly what I was looking for when I graded them (see Haiku Six Traits of Writing Rubric). The Six Traits were also embedded into the steps of the writing process. While they learned about Japan and this style of poetry, this checklist gave them guidelines and a focus. Jacqualynn Bog

Lesson 1 includes a mini-lesson on Word Choice. The entire unit walks through each step of the

Community Committees

The Community Committees packet includes five activities and one assessment to teach community concepts in your classroom. When I taught this, my class and I created our own imaginary community and created laws for us, the citizens, to abide by. We then discussed the traits of a good citizen. I then explained what a committee is and that serving on one to help their community is their duty as citizens. The committees in this packet includes: Safety Committee, Education Committee, Welcoming Commi
