How about using Smarties to teach fractions and probability? Give each student their own pack of Smarties. Begin by having them sort the colors and determine the fraction of each color in their package. Using their sorted piles, and fractions, have them determine the probability of getting each color in their package. You could extend by having partners compare their results. If you have a SmartBoard, Display the chart and collect data/fractions/probability for the whole class.
What better way to interest your students in fractions than using candy manipulatives? With this review activity, students will identify, compare and add fractions with like denominators.
