This download contains three items: First, a 50 question multiple choice test on the novel. Secondly, two true/false quizzes - one over part 1 of the novel and the other over part 2. The download comes with answer keys for the test and quizzes.

Viewing guide with answer key. In chapter 9 of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the author, Rebecca Skloot, watches a video about HeLa cells called The Way of All Flesh by Adam Curtis. This video can be found on YouTube, and it is an excellent summary of what students will read in part one and part two of Skloot’s book. They should answer these questions as they view this BBC documentary.

This test contains 100 questions on Our Town by Thornton Wilder. It has character matching, true false questions, multiple choice questions, a misc. matching section, and matching events to which act in which they occurred. The test can be given entirely on a scantron which makes for easy grading. It even has a bonus writing assignment at the end! The answer key is included.

On YouTube, there is a 50 minute Great Books informational video on Le Morte d' Arthur that also gives a great amount of background on the Arthurian legends, that time period, and the themes presented in texts concerning Arthur. This research assignment poses the question, is it ethical (right) to take a biomedical sample from a patient to use for research without said patient’s informed consent? Students will have to do some research to support their ultimate thesis. They should use quotes from that research and/or the novel in the paper. This assignment walks students through how to put together an argumentative essay. Rubric is included.

Use this game to review for a Lord of the Flies test after reading the book. The game has five categories: Characters, Symbols, Themes, Content, Quotes. As in Jeopardy, the answer is revealed and the students must give the question.

One of the challenges an English teacher faces when teaching The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is how to approach all the science presented in the novel. Some chapters are heavy with scientific terms/explanations, and this can quickly turn students away from the story.
