These semantic charts are partially filled in, so students fill in the missing information (I tried blank ones and it took my third graders entirely too long!). Print a class set of these and keep in a "Running Record" binder! This is great to use in guided reading groups as a formative assessment that lets you see trends in the student's reading strengths and errors. I also like to show parents their child's page during conferences as we discuss their child's progress.

Students practice words with common "chunks." Great to use in small groups or to send home as fluency homework. This helped my first graders move away from sounding out every individual letter and getting confused when they got to word parts like ai, oi, ch, etc. I ran this two-sided on cardstock and laminated for use during my reading groups.

I use this as my first formal writing of the year for my third graders. I provide the introduction and conclusion so they can see good examples of it. They fill in details to sequence their favorite birthday. It really helps them organize their thoughts and form nice narratives.

Do your parents ask you how they can help their child become a better reader? This is one tool I send home early in the year. It shows parents which word parts they can have their child look for if they get stuck on a word while reading to a parent, rather than just telling the child to "sound it out" or giving the child the correct answer right away.

Use as morning work or laminate for a no-prep Work Work station! Each page has students trace, write, find, and color-code the first 40 Dolch words (pre-primer level).
