One way to add and subtract mentally is to understand the role place value plays. Too often, students are taught only one way to add and subtract by using regrouping as the algorithm. While this knowledge is important, having the number sense to add and subtract two and three digit numbers (or more!) helps the student to visualize what he or she is doing when problem solving mathematically.

This is a two page document that reinforces the use of finding patterns in numbers. It is an extension of the function machine commonly used in primary math lessons. It takes the rule a bit further and uses the rule in algebraic form for the student to use in figuring out an algebraic expression. I use this with my high ability 2nd grades, although it can be used with any grade if the student needs enrichment or reteaching.
