Lodging/Hotels and Vacation Unit

Lots of stuff here! You can use just the hotels and lodging as a unit or include vacationing and gaming too! The Lodging Matrix is a cool way to allow your students to choose their own assignment. Comes with it's own scoring guide so they know what is expected from the beginning. It's easy to keep track with a sign up sheet (included). Four different PPTs: Lodging, Gaming, Vacation Planning, and Theme Parks. These lessons were my students favorites! Notes/handouts are also included and go wi

Tourism State Project

This project can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups (I prefer individual). I use this in my HTM (Hospitality and tourism management) class but this can also be great for geography or marketing-related courses. Students research different states in the United States (this can easily be adapted for international areas) and present it to the class as if they were trying to motivate students as tourists to visit the area. Watching a few clips of commercials for states (i.e. Utah, Ca

Food Costing Sheet

Teaching students how to cost out food is valuable--but what if you just need to quickly cost out food for yet another catering job or shopping spree for a food lab? Some school districts now require teachers to itemize their costs even before stepping into the store. Who has time to gather all those numbers on an online store first? With this handy Excel file, you can quickly punch in the amount of each food item/ingredient and it will compute it for you! NEW: Google Sheets version is linked

Paul R. Timm's "50 Most Powerful Ideas You Can Use to Keep Your Customers" is a small book with powerful strategies to increase customer service. This is a great option for students interested in hospitality/customer service or as a way for students to learn transferable skills and reading non-fiction text. While there are 50 ideas, I have only been able to get through the first 25 in my classes. The other half also build off of the first 25's basic ideas so at this point, this ONLY INCLUDES 2

Donation letters

Working as an elective teacher, I am always on the hunt for grants to help fund my programs. However, I found that it was much more successful to raise funds through the community. There are two versions of a donation letter that you can edit and use for your classroom. The letter can also serve as evidence for the donator who may want to claim it on their taxes! As a culinary teacher, our funds mostly come straight from the profits made in catering events. Unfortunately, it was still limiting

Muffin & Biscuit Demo

In a first year foods class, I really want to make sure and demonstrate how to make a high quality muffin and biscuit. Depending on your bell schedule, it's possible to do both demos in the same class period. Sometimes I break this up into two simply to allow students to work in the lab on one before discussing the other. I hand out this worksheet to students as I demo. This works well because I can demo and ask/answer questions at the same time. Sometimes I found students would stop paying at

30 Days episode: Minimum Wage video notes

The TV show, "30 Days" can be a great tool for students to learn from situations. The one episode I especially appreciate is on minimum wage. All too often, I have students believe they can get by on just their part time job and the idea of working hard to complete high school is not a priority. I have made this short assignment for both federal minimum wage and Oregon's. If you live in a different state, all you have to do is change the state wage and your students should be able to understan

Amazon Echo waiver (culinary arts focus)

This waiver is for parents about the new technologies such as voice-controlled intelligent devices. This includes the Amazon Echo "Alexa," Google Home, etc. Some school districts believe it is a risk to have such a device in the classroom. I use it for my culinary arts program but the file is editable and can be adapted to fit your classroom needs.

Culinary Arts Alcohol Waiver

In Oregon, culinary arts students are able to use alcohol in their cooking. However, a waiver helps the school district and you as the teacher safe legally. Your state may be the same, in which case this template to use for parents and school district will be of great help! The file is a document format and easy to edit. I also suggest using a school district letterhead. If you are not in Oregon, you will want to add your state's law using alcohol in a high school culinary class setting.

Chefography Essay

This is a essay that requires students to write about a chef. This is great for students who have an interest in Food Network or love to cook. It satisfies the requirement for students to write non-fiction, use research properly, and learn more about someone who has worked hard to be a skilled professional! Includes a rubric and some starting questions to get students started. I required my students to present their chef to the class and have a visual. One student talked about Duff from Ace of

I use this in my beginning foods and nutrition class to better explain how liquid and solid fats differ and its nutrition. This can be used in a chemistry class or a freshmen foods class. With a little background lesson on the basic idea of bonds, students can get this idea easily. I used Cornell notes as their format and provided pictures of the fats for students who needed it. I also add in a quiz using SMART software but it's easy to do a quick T or F quiz with different fatty foods. The p
