This is a first lesson I use when teaching Geography to my students. This activity allows students to engage in conversation with each other and to have an idea of what geography is. This is a minor activity to allow students to put their thinking caps on and work with others at the start of schools or a new unit. This work sheet is designed for students to use a higher level of thinking and explain the type of map they are looking at. It is designed to see their metacognition (thinking process). It only works if they can explain their answer.

Great graphic organizer for students to use while reading a text. This will help them keep the important information of a text organized. Great first resource when teaching students how to generate questions from a text.

I use this as an intro lesson the first week of school. Gives students a chance to prove they can use a textbook and is a team building activity for the class. I left this as a word document so you can edit it for a textbook you have in the classroom.

Students will complete an online webquest about Otzi the Iceman. I have 7 different tasks listed for them but you can go to the website and add your own tasks you would like them to complete. You can use this as classwork, homework, or something you guys do together. Students will need access to a computer or print out the articles if you are doing something school.

A quick and simple quiz to test students knowledge and ability on their map skills. Can be a great pre assessment as well.

In this activity students get to form a conversation between someone from Sparta and Athens. The point of the conversation is to describe life in their city state and they can be as creative as they would like. Students need to use all 5 vocabulary words while having their conversation. I have included a model of a conversation as well as a a writing template for the script. I usually supply them with 3 pages of a blank script and keep extras in case some students need them.

This three page document allows students to practice remotely on labeling the earth. Map 1 allows you to label the 7 continents and the 5 oceans Map 2 allows you to label the equator and the prime meridian Map 3+4 allows you to label the different hemispheres.

This assignment has a list of 14 vocabulary words from an Early Humans unit. This will take place right before Mesopotamia. You can add words that you would like or take out words that don't fit for your classroom. I prefer to do this before the unit starts so students can preview their vocabulary. Students use definitions of different types of maps plus the pictures provided to identify which map is which. I allow students to work independently or with a group for the assignment. Students have to explain why they picked the map they did using the definition and information from the picture.
