A fun assignment for getting to know the "outsiders" in the novel. This download includes an assignment sheet with directions and a rubric. In this creative project, students design and propose a new cover for the novel Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. Students are challenged to take important symbols and themes from the novel and apply them to the creation of a unique cover. Then, students must write a proposal letter to the author, persuading him to choose a new cover for the book.

Before beginning Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, I used this research project to help familiarize students with the Holocaust. The students work in groups, research assigned topics, and ultimately present these topics to the other students. In assigned groups, students will closely examine a character from the novel. Students will not only note physical descriptions of the characters, but important quotes that reveal aspects of character. Students will develop meaningful symbols to associate with the characters as well. The final product is a life-sized "body biography" of the character. In order to complete this activity, you will need to download and distribute a copy of the Navajo Code Talker Dictionary. There are many available for free online. Using the dictionary, students practice creating and cracking codes. This fun activity will give them an appreciation for what the Code Talkers were able to do in 2 minutes!
