A fun and easy way for your class to get to know each other! Students try to fill in two rows (or as many names as they can) before time is up. The students learn about each other while practicing their communication skills. This activity builds classroom community while having fun! Appropriate for many ages (I've used it with grades 3 - 10).

A simpler icebreaker activity for English Language Learners. Students try to fill in as many squares as they can before time is up - they learn about each other while practicing English, in a less stressful situation. Each square contains a simply worded question, with an easy fill in the blank section to record the name of a person who the statement applies to. When I played this with a group of grade 5/6 ESL students, I heard lots of confident english being spoken (much more than when I use

Experience

I have taught in many different places and roles: elementary school (both primary and intermediate), preschool, museum education, sports instruction, library, and English as a Second Language.

Teaching style

I prefer to use a student-driven, hands-on approach to learning. I use experiential lessons whenever possible, as I believe students learn best by doing. I try to encourage self-efficacy and global citizenship in my students - school is not a place to earn grades, but a place to learn about the world around us.
