The Ransom of Red Chief - by O. Henry - Audio Recording

O. Henry's hilarious story packed with irony, malapropisms, and humor makes a delightful piece of literature to introduce to one's scholars. Depending on the age and reading level of those scholars, this great short story can be a challenge for some to see the humor through colloquial language. Reading aloud to one's scholars is the best way to emphasize the tone and humor of the characters and situations; just the additional of vocal tone helps the scholars find the depth of the theme behind t

Richard Connell's classic tale of dread, intrigue and mystery on a dangerous tropical island is an exciting piece of literature to introduce to one's scholars. Depending on the age and reading level of those scholars, this great short story can be a challenge for some to visualize the action and setting of the story. Reading aloud to one's scholars is the best way to emphasize the experience of the characters as well as the risk and nefarious nature of the situations. Cadence, dialect and vocal

O. Henry's classic tale of mutual sacrifice for the sake of love is a fine piece of literature to introduce to one's scholars. Depending on the age and reading level of those scholars, this great short story can be a challenge for some to see the emotional aspect through the prose. Reading aloud to one's scholars is the best way to emphasize the emotional experience of the characters; just the additional of vocal tone helps the scholars find the depth of the theme behind the words. This is an ingenious audio sketch in which a flustered director is casting for a reading of Jabberwocky with the most random candidates possible. Each participant steps forward to read his stanza in awkward, silly and entertaining styles. By the end, we hear the full performance with each speaker giving his all for the crowd. The vocals are unusual and filled with aural hooks and references for the auditory learned to seize upon, enjoy and connect. The nearly 13 minutes goes through the entir

A companion to the "JabberAuditions" recording (also available on this store), this is the section of the final performance of the several "actors." It runs 2:38 and is a great tool to distribute to your scholars who are learning the poem. They can load it onto their devices and listen repeatedly. The speakers in the recording are weird and funny and their speech has a great many "hooks" and textures for your auditory learners to use as they adopt the poem into their minds.

Ambush - by Tim O'Brien - Audio Recording

This is a quiet, ambient recording of an excerpt from Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. It runs approximately 6:45 and contains some images of combat violence, as one would expect of a recollection of a Vietnam in-country tour experience. This story is very useful for discussions of regret, universal theme, war, peace, and a host of other related topics. Since the story is far from covered by the public domain provision, I offer it here free of charge with great respect to Mr. O'Brien and

Who's There? - by Arthur C. Clarke - Audio Recording

Arthur C. Clarke's great science fiction suspense story. A terrific 12 minute long story to teach setting, atmosphere, and twist endings. I recorded this story for my own scholars to listen to as they read along on their own. It worked out so well, and this story is not yet among the public domain, so I offer it to you here for free. If you enjoy it, please look for some of my other audio recordings that you may find useful.

Rolls for the Czar - by Robin Kinkead - Audio Recording

Robin Kinkead's classic short story of one man's life saved by his quick wit in the face of an insulted, enraged, powerful Czar. This story is very short (5:35) but can lead to good discussion about the commonalities that span from the rich to the poor, the powerful to the weak. We all have cravings, we all have loves, we all have fears. How does one get oneself out of a tricky situation? When is a lie NOT a lie? What is diplomacy and how does one practice it? There are many roots of discussi

Additional biographical information

By day, Ken Wolfe has spent twenty-eight years teaching St. Louisan middle and high school scholars mastery in the ways of English. By night, it's been narrative lies and tall tales to anyone who will listen and pay him. He's a champion of the middle school underdog, four-time winner of the Missouri State Liars Contest, a leading professor of storytelling at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, a published poet, a regular in the hip St. Louis storytelling scene, a unicycling coach, and a nascent author of darkly droll adolescent spy fiction. (Wun, a story of the crumbling ruins of a Bond-esque villain's lair in the jungles of Brazil and the boy who, on a mission trip to the same region, stumbles upon it to find the evil scheme it houses still active and malevolent.)
