Dead Poets Society--Study Guide and Focus Questions/Film Study

I view teaching film in very much the same way I view teaching literature. It's simple to discuss characterization, plot, themes, etc. with film. After teaching short exerpts from Thoreau, Whitman, and other Romanticists, I show Dead Poets Society. This study guide/set of focus questions encourages students to interact with the film, studying it, and paying close attention to/recognizing literary elements as well.

Transcendentalism & Mona Lisa Smile: Film Study

I show my students both Dead Poets Society and Mona Lisa Smile. We compare and contrast them and discuss larger issues of individuality and Transcendentalism, trying to relate it to characteristics of Romantic/Transcendentalist writers such as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, etc. In turn, we also look at artist as history and the idea of "social control" while studying Mona Lisa Smile.

Critical Analysis of Documentary Filmmaking

With my post-secondary and upper secondary (11th grade) students, I devote several weeks to teaching persuasion while also incorporating media literacy. The evolution of filmmaking has allowed average, everyday people to "voice" their opinions, showcase their lives, share their hardships, celebrate their accomplishments, investigate controversies, etc. through the lens of a camera. These ten questions accompany Michael Moore's documentary, "Capitalism: A Love Story" and are meant not only to gui

I use this worksheet along with a Prezi I created. I find that students not only enjoy watching Prezis, but that they're able to note-take, keep up with, and pay closer attention to the sometimes necessary lecturing we have to do. The Prezi can be accessed for free; the URL address is located in the footer of this document. I've priced this item a bit higher than my others because it also includes free use of the Prezi I created (which can be used "as is" or copied and modified to suit your need

Students make connections between some aspect of the novel (i.e., specific character, character relationships, themes, etc.) and another piece of media (i.e., song, painting, movie scene, poem, etc.). This is also an analysis writing assignment in that it requires students to compose well-developed paragraphs explaining the connections they've made between the two pieces.

This assignemtn also focuses somewhat on the irony in certain judicial (courtroom) proceedings. Before I used Carrie Wisehart's "Bucket List" research project, and after I'd introduced the concept (see free lesson), I told them we'd be viewing and evaluating the completed projects of her students (convenient because we work together). I instructed my students to choose any four completed "Bucket List" projects of Mrs. Wisehart's students and evaluate them according to the following criteria and critical observation questions. Kindly, Mrs. Wisehart's students also evaluated my students' pro

I bought and used Carrie Wisehart's "Bucket List Research Project," which is phenomenal, but I had to have a way to introduce the concept to my kids--a way to grab their attention, so this is how I introduced them to (and got them excited about) their unorthodox research project. (The date at the top of the page may be deleted or edited. . . . It is a one-day activity/lesson/intro, however, so I put it there for my purposes.)
