This can be used as a math center, review game, or activity for a substitute. Students work to solve addition and subtraction problems and match the questions and answers to form a 'magic square'. There are two versions on this file. One with pictures to help students orient the pieces. One version is without pictures making it a bit more difficult to match the pieces. You can have students do mental math, or have them write their work on paper for you to review.

Students pretend to be chocolate makers to fill boxes of candy for their friends and family. They use the decimal weights (in ounces) to fill the boxes as close to capacity as possible. This is an open-ended task to allow student to find many different answers. The complete file includes a chocolate menu with weights, photos, and descriptions of 24 pieces of chocolate. This is a short lesson to review improper fractions and mixed numbers, and then to use those numbers in division problems. I used the context of making the keys of a marimba (xylophone-like instrument) to allow students to work through these problems. The lesson includes links to videos of children playing marimbas, a warm-up, the lesson, and an exit ticket question. This can also be used as a formative assessment to help determine students' abilities with these topics.

Students play this game in small groups. It is easily adaptable to the needs or skill levels of your students. They can practice basic operations, order of operations, decomposing numbers into factors, multiples, estimation, etc. Specific directions for how to play versions of this game are included in the file. An editable Word version is also available in my store.

This game is easily adapted to the skills and needs of your students. This version allows you to edit the numbers to create differentiated versions of the game. Change the numbers to decimals, fractions, powers of exponents, equations, etc. to practice different skills. The beauty is that the game is still played the same no matter what the numbers.
