Students will use 6 different recipes created to focus on combining fractions with unlike denominators using substitution and grouping common units. This activity can be easily differentiated by having students build the fractions with manipulatives. It also includes extensions which ask students perform division using decomposition, and create their own recipe.

Students pretend to be chocolate makers to fill boxes of candy for their friends and family. They use the decimal weights (in ounces) to fill the boxes as close to capacity as possible. This is an open-ended task to allow student to find many different answers. The complete file includes a chocolate menu with weights, photos, and descriptions of 24 pieces of chocolate. Feel free to edit these word problems for your use! These word problems are Christmas themed, and require students to use both addition and subtraction of fractions to solve. This is a basic introduction to the ideas of multiplication using repeated addition as well. There are 16 problems total, but you can easily add or edit to suit your needs.

This is an easier version of my Recipe Math activity. It only requires students to combine two unlike denominators. It also uses fractions which are easy to model using fraction strips or other enactive models. Students are asked to estimate fractions to the nearest 1/2 or 1, and use these estimations to judge the reasonableness of their answer.
