A mini-unit designed to give students an abundance of hands-on measuring experience. This unit starts with a lab to help students understand why there are universal measurement systems. Then, students take notes on measuring devices before they jump into a lab where they measure table "mascots." To prepare for an assessment (or could be used as a group assessment) students complete a measurement race to put their new skills to the test.

This is a great activity as a stand-alone or as part of my measurement unit plan. Give students ownership over their measuring skills by providing table/pod/group "mascots" that they will use to learn how to measure length, mass, and volume by displacement.

A GREAT way to engage students in practicing measurement skills. Students work to measure lengths, volumes and masses in a competitive atmosphere.
