From the first day of school I set up my procedures and rules. I am in a Title I District and for a lot of my students, English is not their first language. I find that trust and respect are hard to come by, but once you've built a strong relationship with the students, the walls come down. I try to make my room a safe environment (like most teachers), but I also show the students it's okay to have fun. We joke around, they teach me the current dance crazes (as rewards), I learn their native language and we have a level of respect for each other. I am not their friend, but they know that can come to me with anything.
