HIV Investigation (STEM/PBL)

Created by
Lab207
This inquiry based, PBL piece from Lab207 was written for an AP Biology class. I was short on time and was not going to be able to cover viruses, genetic technology, and gene regulation. In response I wrote this project that puts students in the shoes of an HIV researcher and asks them to investigate and propose a course of action in response to a new strain of HIV. The project is written as a story that the students respond to by turning in 4 separate products and giving a final presentation.

Experience

Presently in my 7th year as an instructional leader. Courses taught include: Biology (General, Honors, and AP), Environmental Science (General and AP), Earth Science, Marine Science. Currently writing a course in public health and an integrated 9th grade health science curriculum.

Teaching style

My classes are a continual work in progress. Presently every course I teach is either "flipped" or 100% PBL. When My classes are not pursuing some sort of inquiry activity we are generally engaged in discussion and application. Additional biographical information

Teaching is what I was built to do. I have a passion for student engagement and relevant education. My goal is to never hear one of my students ask, "When will I ever use this?" I work long days and nights to put together resources that force students to engage and think.
