Learning in First Grade

I use Spalding Phonograms to teach my first graders to read, spell and write! They are an absolute life saver! I use these cards in my room to build a phonogram wall and as flashcards to flip through. Each time I introduce a phonogram to the kids we place this card on the board, learn the saying, then brainstorm words that include this phonogram! This binder is my “first grade bible” to teach my students to read, spell, and write! I use this during my phonics/ELA time. I use big phonogram cards (which can be found in my shop as well) to display that weeks phonograms. As a class, we then work our way through these pages during the week, or sometimes two weeks! The following product goes hand in hand with my Phonogram Binder! These are sound boxes that are focused around each phonogram we learn in our binder. The dots under each sound will help the kids learn to give one sound per dot- then they will slide their finger on the arrow to blend all the sounds into one word.

These cards are meant to be printed back to back, as a teacher tool to help students learn their letter sounds, and basic first grade phonogram sounds. On the back of the cards you will find teacher, substitute, para and parent friendly descriptions of the single or multiple sounds that each letter/phonogram makes, along with example words. This journal is geared towards first graders (but could easily be used for higher kinders, and second graders still struggling with phonics). It begins with short vowel sounds, and progresses into first grade phonograms. It goes hand in hand with my Phonogram Binder, and Phonogram Cards in my TPT store. I just recently took, and passed my Praxis 5362-English to Speakers of Other Languages. This study guide information helped me pass on my first attempt at the test. It is a tricky test with LOTS of "best practice" questions and lots of definition questions! With this information you should do great!

Our school uses this math program and we found that having students use white boards to complete the application problems was rather tricky in first grade! As soon as we introduced these student pages for application problems we noticed that our students were able to perform much better on our Module tests and were able to stay much more organized with their work! Students will build a 13 body part caterpillar by applying their knowledge of contractions! When you copy this project there are three sets of legs on each page- cut them in thirds! One third for each kid. I usually copy the body and head on green, and then one set of legs on yellow the other on orange. If you separate out the leg color they can keep better track of matching words with their contraction pair (one yellow and one orange per body piece)! ENJOY!!!
