This is a PPT tutorital containing steps and photo examples for hand sewing a drawstring back using the running stitch, backstitch, and blind hem (slip) stitch. It is the final project for my students after they learn the most common stitches and sewing terminology. This is specifically for my costume design students, but is very applicable in FACS or any textile course. They complete this bag in place of a test. It requires 1 fat quarter of fabric and a 24" piece of cord, ribbon, bias tape,

Sewing a Button Tutorial and Video

This is a step by step photo tutorial that will guide students through the process of sewing a 4-hole button. This method stresses the use of a spacer while sewing to create a shank that allows the fabric space to loop over the button, reducing stress on the garment. The same process may be applied to 2-hole buttons. A video is embedded as the last slide that demonstrates the method in action.

Distinguishing between narrative, expository, and biographical writing

My students were having a lot of trouble telling the difference between these three writing styles. This lesson is designed around gradual release. Students take notes on the three qualities given for each style then use those notes to determine which is which for two themed sets of three examples each. They then write on an assigned topic before moving onto a freewrite in which they may write a narrative, expository, or biographical piece of their own. These freewritten pieces are crumpled

This template could be adapted to any purpose like the Great Depression and four reasons it began or one art movement and four examples from artists within it. It's an awesome way to encourage creative thinking that surpasses the typical graphic organizer. The pinwheels look awesome displayed on the wall or bulletin board. Teaching style

Hands on! Learning by doing is the best way to learn. The biggest goal in my classes is to expand my students' creativity by equipping them with new skills and forcing them to apply those skills in novel ways with minimal limits. My kids repeat my mantra to me: "create something you're proud of!"
