Graphing Linear Equations and Shading Inequalities: Stained Glass Window Project

Created by
Let's Talk Math
This artistic stained glass window project allows students to practice graphing the equations of lines (in slope intercept form, as well as horizonal and vertical lines) to create the structure for their window. Once the lines are set, students will shade the different solution sets or regions created by the multiple inequalities. As an added bonus, this project is self-checking, as students will know if they have shaded the inequality solution sets correctly because the window will be complet

Right Triangle Trigonometry Board Game Project with Rubric and Student Sample

Created by
Let's Talk Math
This project is a great way for students to be creative and demonstrate their understanding of Right Triangle Trigonometry in a board game format. This resource includes a task sheet, rubric, and student work sample. Students are prompted to create a variety of problems that demonstrate their ability to write sine, cosine and tangent ratios, solve for sides and angles, and create word problems incorporating angles of elevation and depression. In addition to the math skills required to comple

Ferris Wheel Performance Task - Interior and Exterior Angles of Polygons

Created by
Let's Talk Math
In this activity students will research a Ferris Wheel of their choosing and investigate the measures of the interior and exterior angles while applying the various polygon formulas to a real world application. They will also employ critical thinking skills to figure out the capacity of their Ferris Wheel. In addition, they will research some special features of their Ferris Wheel and, because the task is open-ended, there will be a range of response that students will generate, which incorpor

Garden Fence Mini-Project: Area Optimization without Calculus

Created by
Let's Talk Math
Students will solve a classic area optimization problem involving working with a set amount of fencing. In the first example, students will create a rectangular fence that maximizes the area. In the second example, one of the sides will be created by a natural barrier, however, the goal will still be to maximize the area. Though this mini-project can be done paper/pencil, I recommend having students edit this as a Google Doc so they can insert screenshots of their sketches and also insert Desm

Beginning of Year Elements of Geometry - Children's Book Math Project

Created by
Let's Talk Math
This is a great project to introduce students to the elements of Geometry (typically the first unit of the year). Students will either write an original story, or modify an existing children's book with the goal of highlighting the elements of Geometry and how they appear in the world around us. A task sheet, rubric and partial student sample are included as a guide.

Valentine's Day Conversation Heart Candy Probability Worksheet

Created by
Let's Talk Math
Perfect probability activity for Valentine's Day, or any day where you want to motivate students to do math with candy! Students practice finding probabilities (and, or, independent/without replacement, dependent/with replacement and expected) using Sweetheart conversation hearts. This worksheet incorporates student choice in allowing students to select categories for their data so no two worksheets will be the same.

Centroid Mobile Project

Created by
Let's Talk Math
This project allows students to master constructing the centroids of different types of triangles (right, obtuse, acute and isosceles). If successful, students will "see" visually with their mobile that the centroid is the center of gravity and is unique for creating a point of balance. There is an interesting real world connection to art with students constructing a mobile of their own.

Experience

Let's Talk Math is a place where you will find resources that often combine mathematics and literacy. If you are looking for creative projects that push students to see the real-world connections between concepts they are learning in the classroom and applications beyond the classroom, you've come to the right place! Teaching style

I believe in a reform-based mathematics classroom. What do I mean by this? A classroom where the teacher is a facilitator of student learning rather than just the "expert" in the room. My classroom has students seated in groups and has a lot of noise (productive noise!) where students are talking and sharing their ideas about mathematics.

Awards & shining teacher moments

In 2011, I was one of 22 teachers chosen by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) to visit South Africa as part of a cultural teaching exchange program for secondary school teachers. You can read about my experiences in my blog My Time In Tweespruit https://carolinemarkel.blogspot.com/2010/07/

My own education history

I am most proud that I recently completed my doctorate in Urban Education with a specialization in Policy Studies.

Additional biographical information

I have been teaching mathematics for 20 years. Most of my experience is at the high school level but there are a couple of years of middle school in that time too! I am a mom of 3 boys and live with my husband in the same town that I work. My happy place is in my classroom with a coffee in hand - hot or iced, it doesn't really matter as long as I'm caffeinated!
