Ferris Wheel Performance Task - Interior and Exterior Angles of Polygons

Created by
Let's Talk Math
In this activity students will research a Ferris Wheel of their choosing and investigate the measures of the interior and exterior angles while applying the various polygon formulas to a real world application. They will also employ critical thinking skills to figure out the capacity of their Ferris Wheel. In addition, they will research some special features of their Ferris Wheel and, because the task is open-ended, there will be a range of response that students will generate, which incorpor

Garden Fence Mini-Project: Area Optimization without Calculus

Created by
Let's Talk Math
Students will solve a classic area optimization problem involving working with a set amount of fencing. In the first example, students will create a rectangular fence that maximizes the area. In the second example, one of the sides will be created by a natural barrier, however, the goal will still be to maximize the area. Though this mini-project can be done paper/pencil, I recommend having students edit this as a Google Doc so they can insert screenshots of their sketches and also insert Desm

Teaching style

I believe in a reform-based mathematics classroom. What do I mean by this? A classroom where the teacher is a facilitator of student learning rather than just the "expert" in the room. My classroom has students seated in groups and has a lot of noise (productive noise!) where students are talking and sharing their ideas about mathematics.

Awards & shining teacher moments

In 2011, I was one of 22 teachers chosen by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) to visit South Africa as part of a cultural teaching exchange program for secondary school teachers. You can read about my experiences in my blog My Time In Tweespruit https://carolinemarkel.blogspot.com/2010/07/

My own education history

I am most proud that I recently completed my doctorate in Urban Education with a specialization in Policy Studies.

Additional biographical information

I have been teaching mathematics for 20 years. Most of my experience is at the high school level but there are a couple of years of middle school in that time too! I am a mom of 3 boys and live with my husband in the same town that I work. My happy place is in my classroom with a coffee in hand - hot or iced, it doesn't really matter as long as I'm caffeinated!
