I have over 13 years experience teaching high school math. I started my career teaching in Quincy, Florida for 2 years. After that I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina for 3 years. I tried it back home where I grew up in Juneau, Alaska for 2 years. After leaving Alaska, I moved back to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where I taught for 4 years and I was the department chair for the last 3 years. I taught in Clarksville, TN for 2 years and was a Level 5 teacher my final year there. I recently graduated with my Masters in Mathematics Education, K - 8, and I currently teach at Juneau Douglas High School.

Distributive Property & Combining Like Terms 4 x 4 Bingo
This is Bingo game is a great way to review or practice the important skill of simplifying expressions. To start the game, have each student create their own game board using a pen or marker (if they use a pencil, they may try and move their answers to get a bingo quicker). Before I begin the game, I walk around to make sure that all the game boards have been completed and write the numbers 1 to 20 on the board. Distributing & Combining Like Terms Dominos
This is a great way for students to practice using the Distributive Property and simplifying. Students work out a problem (the start problem) find the correct answer, and do the problem attached to the answer. It should make a line of dominos.
Students love these types of activities and it challenges them to find the correct answer.

This worksheet has 2 worked out examples that show each step with explanation, 15 problems, and an answer key is provided. This worksheet has harder problems than the first worksheet, which include simplifying two different distributive properties and then combining them.

Distributive Property Speed Trials
I have created 8 sets of 10 different problems to help student practice the Distributive Property. After teaching this concept and some practice on it, I will do these speed trials in class. Students love it and after doing several of them they begin to see improvements.

Distributive Property OCaptain Game
This game is a great way to practice the Distributive Property! Students need to be in groups of 3, and all that is needed to play is cards (included) dry erase board, marker, and eraser.
One student starts as the Captain. The other two players choose a card and put them on their forehead (without look at their card). Algebra I Integers & Absolute Value Practice Worksheet
This is a 23 question worksheet (and key) that is broken down into 3 different parts. Part I is a Rational Number review, which includes graphing sets of rational numbers on a number line (and vice versa) and simplifying absolute value expressions. Part 2 practices addition and subtraction of integers through matrices. Part 3 practices integers operations through application problems. It is a great worksheet for in class or for homework.

Integer Bingo - 2 different games!
There are two different integer games here! Students love to play the game and it gives them an excellent opportunity to review such an important concept.
I usually make the students create their board using a marker or pen and we cross off answers once they have been completed. I will use the same board for the entire game having the possible winning combinations: traditional bingo, 4 corners, box of 4, double bingo with 2 lines, box of 9, or all the lines passing through the center.

This is a 20 question quiz (with Key) that is great to use after working with integers & absolute value. Below is a breakdown of the different types of problems on the quiz. I would NOT allow the use of a calculator on this quiz. Verbal Expressions Multiple Choice Overhead Practice
This activity is great to use as a review of verbal statements. There are 18 different problems that focus on the areas that students mix up the most. For this activity, each student will need A, B, C, D cards (make sure that the letters are big enough for you to see from around the room and I recommend that all letters are the same color, otherwise students might copy from a neighbor). For this activity I have students put the worksheet into a sheet protector. That way they are able to use dry erase markers to do the problems. There is plenty of space for the big markers and for students to show each step. There are 11 order of operations and 2 substitution problems. This activity comes with a key showing all the steps.

Teaching style
Each school that I have taught in has been considered a "low performing" school and I have always worked with students that come in lacking prior knowledge and the motivation to be successful.
I create and use a lot of activities and games that help keep my students engaged. A co-worker of mine calls me, "The Game Queen."

I was a Level 5 teacher for the 2011-2012 in Tennessee, with some of the highest scores in Algebra 2 for the school district (which included my inclusion class)

I graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1994. I attended Florida State University and earned my Bachelors degree in December 1998 for Curriculum and Instruction: Mathematics Education (6-12).
