The Crucible Study Guide Act 1
This is a study guide made and edited over several years that focus on pre reading strategies, plot construction and most importantly characterization. The guide walks students through major themes of the play, events of Act 1 and culminates with activities to such as a Sociogram, Character Analysis group work with textual evidence and a writing piece that analyzes the characterization of a character.

"Why I Wrote the Crucible" 1st Read Aloud
After discovering that "The Crucible" was written in response to McCarthyism, students will complete a close reading process on the essay "Why I Wrote the Crucible" by Arthur Miller. This is the 1st read of the process and is done as a read aloud to the students. While teacher is reading aloud, students takes notes on the readers thoughts and connections spoken aloud. Study Guide 3 builds on Study Guide 1 and 2. This is a fairly simple and straightforward guide that moves quickly through the act as students read along. Students continue to trace a word through out the play and to respond to a mix of basic comprehension questions as well as several higher order thinking ones that ask them to evaluate lines spoken. The Study Guide ends with an analysis of their traced word and some analysis from Sparknotes.

Argument Essay Overview and Guidelines
This outline provides a very simple, effective and time tested outline for students to follow when approaching and writing a timed Argument or Synthesis Essay. This outline will also work exceedingly well for any Social Studies essay. The outline provides guidelines for how to write an excellent but brief introduction, 3 developed but short bodies of evidence and analysis. Some slides provide sentence starters for counter claims and list transition words organized by relationship.

Experience
I have taught Secondary ELA in New York State since 2004. I have experience with grades 7-12 with many varied abilities, second languages, learning disabilities as well as advanced students in AP Lang.
Teaching style
I run a very organized structured classroom with lots of room for improvisation. My units and lessons are designed backwards with the goal in mind first. I like to lean on the structure of the lesson but use their interests, thoughts, mood etc... to direct the examples and stories I use and tell to explain ideas and concepts in a modern way. I am a very animated teacher who uses lots of story telling, jokes, and interactions to make the structure seem invisible. Students generally tend to enjoy my high school English classes and my "style".
Awards & shining teacher moments
I've taught in a public high school in a lower income community for over 20 years - no one really awards good teachers. We remain invisible backbones. Cynicism aside, I have been invited by many students to their athletic game teacher appreciation nights. These are really the best awards to receive. :-)
