These essay questions promote critical thinking, close textual analysis, and are also excellent Socratic discussion questions. Jury of Her Peers: Short Story Test.7 Short answer questions and 1 timed essay question. Test created for 9th grade gate, but can be differentiated for other grades/levels. Asks higher level questions (Costa's level three questions) that force students to close read and think critically about the text. Questions can be used for Socratic seminar, or lead students through the text. Essay questions can be used to build background prior to reading the text.

1 page--activity asks students to think critically about their own values, and compare them to Beowulf's values. This activity creates great discussions based on student interpretations of Beowulf's character and motivation. Students must do close reading to really prove their points with evidence. This is a great lead into an essay regarding character motivation within Beowulf. Can be modified for any novel, short story, or poem.

Oedipus Final Test & Timed Write that asks students to draw a "comic strip" style map that depicts the important/significant events in the text. Part two of the test is a timed write where students are asked to think critically about the tragic flaw in Oedipus. Test can be differntiated for several levels and allows students to use different modalities. Created for Gate & mainstream freshman, but used successfully with senior honors.
