Excellent review resource for the English II End-of-Course exam!

The presentation provides historical context for the poem to prepare students to discuss a common theme that runs through both the poem and the novel Fahrenheit 451. The last two slides provide a sample of themes that students could explore. These questions are modeled after the Missouri End-of-Course exam and provide students an opportunity to practice close reading with text-dependent questions. Students create a flip book for studying and reviewing logical fallacies such as bandwagon, appeal to nature, ad hominem, straw man, and false causation. I used this along with the argumentative writing practice in IXL for my English II students to prepare them for the End-of-Course exam.

These questions over Homer Hickam's Rocket Boys are modeled after the Missouri ELA End-of-Course exam. I put my heart and soul into these in hopes of increasing my students' scores. Enjoy!

Students make a foldable resource to record basic comma usage rules. The resource contains an example of the foldable flip book that my students made as well as 44 slides of notes and original examples.

This is a guided reading worksheet for students to use along with their reading of Homer Hickam's Rocket Boys.

Students choose from a variety of topics from Act I of The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. These topics are designed to promote classroom discussion about the central themes of the play but are easily accessible for students without much prompting from the teacher. Differentiation occurs naturally because students are able to choose the topic that fits their interest and ability level.

This is a close reading worksheet for students to use with Chapter 3 of Homer Hickam's Rocket Boys.

This reading guide can be used seamlessly with any piece of argumentative writing to help students better understand the structure and content of the piece they are reading. It includes step-by-step instructions for identifying the claim and counterclaim as well as suggestions for making annotations more effectively. The last step includes a two-paragraph reflection in which students summarize the original argument and then provide their own opinion on the topic.

This project gives students a chance to be creative while learning about how Greek and Latin roots and affixes work together to create words. The Power Point includes an example project as well as a scoring guide that could be adapted or printed and used as is to grade the project. You will need to give students a list of Greek and Latin roots and affixes or provide them with a link to a credible website. I have found that these are readily available on several sites online.

Bradbury's deliberate inclusion of the poem Dover Beach within Fahrenheit 451 offers the perfect opportunity for students to explore the development of a theme across genres. Students choose from the following conjunctive adverbs to combine sets of sentences: however, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, in fact, furthermore, similarly,  thus, hence, therefore. The practice was originally used in connection to the novel Of Mice and Men, but it can also stand alone.

Help students identify and label the basic parts of a sentence in a way that makes sense.
