Long Live Math

Here is an activity I use when practicing the data standards for Algebra. The students take a survey and put their information in a table. The students then use the table to complete the questions. The students like completing the activity since it uses their own data!

This activity has students graphing linear functions. When finished, their graphs will have created a picture (a diamond)! They will need to know how to graph lines with fractional sloped and non-fractional slopes. They will also need to know how to graph vertical and horizontal slopes. There are only 3 linear functions like this, and since my students did not know how to do this, I decided to walk them through this part as the example. A fun way to engage the kids!

There are 9 linear function word problems that ask the students to identify x, an y from the problem, create a table, find the slope and y-intercept, and write the equation. This is an introduction lesson to writing equations for linear functions.

This activity has the students graph the itinerary of two teacher's trip to Disneyland on a four coordinate grid. They have to find the equation of a line using slope and a coordinate as well as understand what parallel and perpendicular lines mean. This activity is very engaging! It took two days to have the students complete it but it was well worth it! The activity is based off one of my coworkers and me, you can edit this very easily!

This station activities has students creating exponential and linear functions and evaluating them, creating an exponential and linear functions from tables, and writing equations from linear functions that are graphed.

This activity has the students assess the difference between finding the median and mean in a set of data.This includes standard deviation and box and whisker plots.

This activity is an extension activity for students who have been solving real world problems. They are asked to create their own problem they would like to solve. It is a very open ended activity that gives the students freedom to be creative while still using their math skills! I used it as an extension for my high level Algebra class and they enjoyed it!

This is an activity that I use to have students practice graphing linear functions. They must include items to make a complete graph, such as a scale, arrows, and the y-intercept labeled.

This is an experiment that relates the diameter and the volume of a cylinder. The students are walked through the experiment to discover unique aspects about the cylinder formula.

The students compare the different prices of two DVD companies. They have to write an equation, create a table, and draw a graph for each one. Then, the students have to compare the two companies to find out which one is a better deal. Aligned to common core standard 8.F.4. Document is editable.

The students create their own coordinate picture using a 4 quadrant grid. They have to write instructions for another students to replicate their drawing. I have students complete this when graphing coordinates. Then, I will post some of the "pictures" in the room and give students a prize (extra credit, homework pass, etc.) if they complete one of their classmates picture.

This study guide was created for the common core standard 8.F.4. The students need to represent linear functions in tables, graphs, and equations.
