My first year as a teacher I taught 5th and 6th grade in the same classroom. Needless to say that was an experience in itself. My second year to teach, I taught 4th grade. I had a total of 5 students. No, it was not as easy as it sounds. Since then, I have taught 3rd grade and love it.

I used this activity for the week before Christmas break. I made both kinds (homemade and store bought) hot chocolate. They tasted both without knowing which was homemade. They used observation to make a prediction. I incorporated the idea that scientists use their 5 senses to make predicitons.

I used this with my unit on Polar Express. It can also be used for train unit or just for fun. Each car of the train has a sentence on it. The students identify the parts of speech. They build their own gold to carry on their train car. I will modify based on your purpose for the lesson. I can do it with simple, compound, complex, kinds of sentences, certain part of speech. I have attached 20 train cars with simple sentences. They are able to identify nouns and verbs in these sentences.

My own education history

I graduated High School in 1999. I went to a 2 year college and received my Associates Degree. Then I transferred to a 4 year college to achieve my Bachelor's Degree in Education.
