The "Story Pie" is a way for students to display important information about a novel read independently or as a group. Students are required to respond to predetermined questions using a particular format for open-ended prompts. Format includes using evidence from the text to support their response. This format serves as a simple and easy-to-use template for students when responding to any type of extended response when reading novels, short passages, non-fiction text, etc. Students incorporate evidence from the passage as support followed by their own thoughts, ideas, opinions. Template then transfers easily into a formal paragraph.

Independent genre unit is an assignment given throughout each nine week period to be completed within a four to six week time frame. This unit contains skills and concepts that are used throughout the school year. After selecting an appropriate biography, students will complete the packet to increase vocabulary, become a more fluent reader, and understand the novel better.
