Use this blank words template for testing CVC words, long/short vowel words, sight words, words, r-controlled vowel words, blends, or any other group of words that you have been working on in class. I find it especially helpful to write in the words and then copy onto cardstock and put in plastic sheet protectors so that I can re-use it year after year. Then I can track the data of who knows what!

Use this form for students to highlight their choices each day for Daily Five. I use one form per Guided Reading group. This way, I can easily see who is doing what and manage their literacy time. The choices on my form (it can be edited for your individual needs) are as follows: Read to Self, Writing, Word Work, Technology, Read to Others/Listen. I have extra spaces for Read to Self and Technology because I want students to do those twice during the week but, again, you can make it work for you

Teaching Haikus helps with syllables and can be a great way to teach sensory language. It is also a great way to make poetry more accessible to young children. These Haikus are fun for early elementary and also teach some great vocabulary. I used them to introduce the genre, then we had another week of Haikus before writing some of our own!

Use this word document as a center or mini-lesson to practice sequencing with your students. The short story is clearly sequenced so print it out and then cut it into parts and mix them up. If you want to use it with multiple groups, you can print several copies and/or laminate it. I like to read a book that is easy to sequence first to teach the skill and talk about my own thinking (something like "Three Little Pigs" or "Rosie's Walk." Then, I give students the mixed up story and have them put

Experience

This will be my 23rd year teaching. I have loved every year, and I keep learning and growing. I have experience at all levels, including PreK-8, private, public, and charter. Most all of my experience has been in high-need, Title 1 schools where there is extremely high poverty.

Teaching style

I have been around long enough to see just about every "band wagon" come through education. That being said, I think good teachers have lots of tools in their tool belt. Most important is to keep learning and listening to the kids. Be willing to laugh with them and at yourself. If you can't enjoy this job, you are in the wrong profession.
