A proofreading checklist is a great way to help students begin to internalize the proofreading process. After they write a story or paragraph, I always have my students complete a proofreading activity. This helps to make proofreading an automatic part of the writing process. This checklist can be used at writing centers or given as homework. Students can also use these forms when proofreading other students' writing.
