I started teaching this unit as a way to introduce To Kill A Mockingbird to my students...but my kids were so into it (AND it hit on a ton of Common Core Standards...especially with informational text) that I now teach it every year. This easily works for either an ELA or Social Studies lesson. Includes: -2 PowerPoint Presentations: -1 PPT. on Word Choice/Tone (11 Slides) -1 PPT. on The Scottsboro Boys (10 Slides) -Teacher Instructions -3 Newspaper Articles from 1931 -Article Analysis Q
This is one of my favorite lessons to teach, especially on Valentine's Day! The article is great for close reading, and there are 3 forms of assessment which makes it great for small groups!
This Unit Includes the following (in order):
1. Powerpoint Presentation (8 slides)
2. New York Times Newspaper Article from 1929 (3 pages)
3. Article Comprehension Questions (13 questions)

When it comes to standardized testing, I find that most of my students knew the material, but just didn't understand the question itself. One thing that really worked to increase test scores with my students is to teach them the "test terms" they will be asked on their standardized tests.
This is great test prep tool on the most frequently used (and confused) terms in standardized tests from grades 6-12.

I use these "think marks" in a few different ways:
1. Homework assignments! It's a great way to keep your students accountable for reading at home.
2. Group Work! It's a great resource for literary circles.
3. Special Ed! Easily modify this assignment by asking students to answer one question from each category.

Really great resource for students have trouble getting started with their writing!
*I give all my IEP students a copy of this at the beginning of the year and tape it into their notebooks!
These "Checkmarks" can be used as a bookmark, and are great for students who are reading different books or texts.
I usually use them as homework assignments to go with their assigned reading.
