"If I Had Sneezed..." is an excerpt from the "Mountaintop" speech (the last speech Dr. King gave before he was assassinated in Memphis the next day.)
I tried to read "I Have a Dream" with my 8th grade students in preparation for MLK Day, but I found that my IEP students were really struggling with it. This is a much easier text to understand AND more high interest! I let them listen to the speech as we read. This is the link I use from Youtube:

This is a great unit to help you get started with your literary circles! There are really fantastic resources for literary circles if you search the web, but they were a little overwhelming for me (and my students) not to mention that I'm not made of paper!
This is a 16 page Common Core aligned/ paper-saver friendly/ I actually understand the directions unit. Lit. Circles can be tricky and can chaotic if you aren't organized. I would recommend that each of your groups have a folder to keep you

When it comes to standardized testing, I find that most of my students knew the material, but just didn't understand the question itself. One thing that really worked to increase test scores with my students is to teach them the "test terms" they will be asked on their standardized tests.
This is great test prep tool on the most frequently used (and confused) terms in standardized tests from grades 6-12.
