My background
I have been teaching and learning all of my working life. It has been a lifelong passion for me to help struggling students reach high levels of success. In 1999, I started my first classroom teaching job in Oakland, California. I had a class of 45 middle school students who had been blindly promoted through school and couldn't read half of the words written on this page. By the end of my second year teaching, most of them were reading at a fifth grade level and three appeared on Disney Radio, featured for their success in learning to read for the first time as middle school students. They had skills and confidence in their reading.
Currently I teach 5th grade in Oregon.

Editing Checklist for writing students grade 4 - 8
This is an editing checklist that you can use for students in 4th through 8th grade. It makes the editing process visual. You can actually see if the students have followed the steps. It works very well with both ESL students and other students.

Weekly Reading Log - Can be used for HW
This is a weekly reading log that I use for my students for homework. I have tried a bunch of different logs. Finally, I created my own simple log. Students create their own personal goal for how much they read each week. (You can help with this or assign them amount.) They then write the pages they read, the time, the name of the book and a short summary of what they learned.

2nd - 8th
English Language Arts
Free: Math vocabulary - statistics, and triangles
Do your students confuse words like median, range, mode and mean? Those words can be confusing enough to adults! What about a scalene triangle versus an isosceles triangle?
This power point helps students remember difficult, but important math words. Each word has a link word, which rhymes with the word the student needs to remember. Then it also has a fun sentence to help the student remember the new word.

Free: Editing lessons, adding interesting openings to sentences
Do your students have a hard time putting a comma after a sentence opener or dependent clause. Are you not sure how to teach it in the context of writing. This is both a revision lesson and a grammar lesson that teachers students how to use sentence openers.

<p>I have been recognized on National Public Radio, Disney Radio, and in the Oakland Tribune for my success in teaching children more than 2 years behind grade level to read. I spent two years teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade in Oakland, California through the nationally recognized Teach For America program.
