Oobleck and investigating states of matter

Student activity to investigate the properties of "oobleck" to determine if it is a solid or a liquid. Oobleck is made of cornstarch, water, and green food coloring - mix slowly until the consistency of pancake batter. I also have students read the Dr. Suess book "Bartholomew and the Oobleck".

Investigating density with Shrinky Dinks

Investigation of density using shrinky dink plastic. Using Shrinky Dinks (polyethylene - recycling code 5) to practice density measurements and calculations as well as conservation of mass. I like the shrink film from "Grafix" company and cut the sheets into quarters for this activity. This is a student favorite because even though they are doing math and learning the concept, they get to keep the finished product. An electronic scale is recommended for mass measurement and rulers for the volu

A document that is formatted for printing as a booklet (folded in half and stapled for page turning). The pages review/extend student knowledge of phases of matter and phase changes. Pages of assembled booklet include: melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, a phase change diagram with interpretation questions, a graphic of the water cycle for labeling, a Venn diagram for comparing and contrasting 2 of the phase changes, and particle arrangement in the 3 main phases. The back cover is o

MAB - The scientific method is all around us. It is how our brains think to solve problems, and we do not even realize it! The scientific method is not just for sceince labs and science fair projects, it is used to solve everyday problems, large and small. These pages are intended for use after introducing/reviewing the scientific method steps. Students explore the problems people have and read example stories about random problems. They highlight the text in the stories according to a key

Students learn how to calculate the density of some solids and liquids by going through the whole process, not just doing the math. After observing the concept of sink or float and how that relates to density, students use liquid and small solid samples, measure the mass and volume to determine numeric density, and then try it out to check their work. **This longer document walks students through each step, without a lot of choice on the part of the student. "Density Challenge" is more open-
