Student activity to investigate the properties of "oobleck" to determine if it is a solid or a liquid. Oobleck is made of cornstarch, water, and green food coloring - mix slowly until the consistency of pancake batter. I also have students read the Dr. Suess book "Bartholomew and the Oobleck".

Design and Build an Earthquake Resistant Structure

Created by

This is a challenge activity for students to use a variety of materials to create a building that will be subjected to an "earthquake" to see how it fares. Students need to make a blueprint, build their structure, transfer their structure to an earthquake shake table (I made my own as they are expensive. I suppose you could also just shake a desk...), watch the destruction, and answer analysis questions. A rubric for the challenge is included. This is a fun challenge for hands-on learners

Mapping a Future World - plate tectonics project

Created by
MAB
In this mapping activity, students are directed to use their knowledge of plate boundaries and types of lithosphere (continental and oceanic) to "map" what our future (very distant future!) world might look like. Using a labeled map and current plate speeds, students work to cut out each plate, move it a scaled amount in an indicated direction, and tape it down in it's new location. This requires a fair amount of preparation and colored copies, but much of it can be used year after year once m

Powerpoint format 100+ slides on the topics of weathering (mechanical and chemical), soils (types and formation), and erosion (mass movements mostly). Includes lesson essential questions for each of the 3 main parts, good visuals, a few short lab activities, content for notes, and summarizing strategies embedded (yellow slides and frayer diagrams). Also has a link to iheartsoil.org PSA videos - you can get free stuff from this website too! Used successfully with 7th grade science students. M

Set of directions and questions for exploring the portions of the United States Geologic Survey website that deal with earthquakes and volcanoes. Some questions specific to the U.S. and one question about my home state of PA, but that can be edited. The USGS website provides some great real-time data, so the answers will vary possibly by day and always be current and relevant!

Investigating density with Shrinky Dinks

Investigation of density using shrinky dink plastic. Using Shrinky Dinks (polyethylene - recycling code 5) to practice density measurements and calculations as well as conservation of mass. I like the shrink film from "Grafix" company and cut the sheets into quarters for this activity. This is a student favorite because even though they are doing math and learning the concept, they get to keep the finished product. An electronic scale is recommended for mass measurement and rulers for the volu

This ActivInspire flipchart offers essential questions about the topic of volcanoes, information for note-taking/lecture, interactive sorting and labeling slides, and clear graphics. Topics include: the parts of a volcano, locations where volcanoes are likely to occur, types of eruptions and causes of each, shapes and formation of the 3 main volcanic landforms, basic effects of eruptions. I little background on Paricutin and Krakatoa are included as well.

MAB - The scientific method is all around us. It is how our brains think to solve problems, and we do not even realize it! The scientific method is not just for sceince labs and science fair projects, it is used to solve everyday problems, large and small. These pages are intended for use after introducing/reviewing the scientific method steps. Students explore the problems people have and read example stories about random problems. They highlight the text in the stories according to a key

MAB This is a literacy/english push in to my science class. Use with Sopris West “Step up to Writing” program section “Great Short Answers”. I used with tools 1-35a-c and assessment tool 10-11a from the intermediate program. I use the tools/pages first, then use the following cards of answers (printed and glued to colored index cards, which I laminate) to 6 separate questions included. Students work in groups of 2-3 and respond as prompted. Questions and answers are on an earth science theme,

This was created by me to visaully show content in leiu of a study guide to represent material in a unit on oceanography, ocean water, and the water cycle. For more visual learners, this document uses color, shapes/outlines, and graphics to connect and scaffold content. All content is filled in for study purposes and helping visual learners and ESL students. Could be adapted by boxing over content and making more of a "fill in the blank" approach. MAB

Students learn how to calculate the density of some solids and liquids by going through the whole process, not just doing the math. After observing the concept of sink or float and how that relates to density, students use liquid and small solid samples, measure the mass and volume to determine numeric density, and then try it out to check their work. **This longer document walks students through each step, without a lot of choice on the part of the student.
