This is my 12th year teaching elementary school. I have taught first, second and third grades. With the adoption of Common Core, I am excited to create new and creative lessons and activities.
This is a great way to incorporate grammar, sentence structure and model writing in math to meet the Common Cores expectations!
These 15 word problem templates (and Suggested word lists) can be completed by individuals, partners, or the whole class. Difficulty can be monitored by making "rules" for the numbers (minimum or maximum, or giving sample numbers to choose from). Students can create their own, and then solve their friend's problem.
Common Core for second graders introduces addition with regrouping by making the next ten. This worksheet has 3 levels of Making the Next Ten. It includes an answer key.
Use these Mad Libs templates to have your students work independently or as a group to create their own multiplication and division word problems. There is a suggested word list to help the students if needed.

This lesson introduces rich vocabulary and reinforces the skills of Alliteration, Rhythmic Pattern, and Rhyme. It includes step by step directions, encorporates a short cartoon video clip, an assessment option, and a classroom management idea. On top of all that, it's fun! I used this lesson with my second graders and they have been talking about it since. We watched the clip a few times since it's only 39 seconds.
Students can practice as a center, or use this as a whole group review! Place value up to the hundreds place, adding and subtracting 10 or 100. Student engagement is increased with their involvement in generating the numbers!
This power point coordinates with a 4 part unit on the Star Spangled Banner. The lesson uses nonfiction text to improve vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Be sure to download the lesson that goes with this PPT!
The students will practice reading a chart for information, inferring, and addition of 3- 2 digit numbers. This simple lesson worked great to meet the rigorous expectations of Common Core.
