Students use gapminder.org/tools to discover the relationships between various historical factors and the population of many countries over time. This lesson connects history with linear relationships. It is a great way to add context to graphs and help students apply their math knowledge in a unique cross-content way.
Students will use misleading leading graphs to create advertisements and explain why it is a misrepresentation of the data. They will also create misleading graphs.
In this project, students demonstrate their understanding of triangles (trigonometry, special right triangles, Pythagorean theorem, triangle congruence and similarity) by writing a children's book. In the book, main characters have to go on a journey to find their missing sides and angles. They in turn help others find their sides using congruence and similarity. Students are required to demonstrate their math at the end of the book.
In this lab, students will investigate how many pennies in a cup it will take to break a bridge of spaghetti. They will study linear equations in a hands-on way.
Play the common card game "spoons" but with the unit circle! The goal is to teach students how to use the unit circle to find trigonometric values and/or to help support students in memorizing the unit circle. The game can be differentiated to fit the needs of the learners in your class. Students love playing this game!
In this project, students will demonstrate their understanding of geometry with a culminating project. The scrapbook requires them to create pages for each of the main topics in geometry. I used this as a 2nd semester/4th quarter project.
Students practice finding slope in partners. The activity has two columns. Problems numbered the same have the same answers so students can check their work.
