Slides about how chemical reactions are like dating and a lab that has simple stations / demos for the main reaction types. (Formation, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion.)
Created for Alberta Chemistry 30, but works for any introductory organic naming unit. Students use posters of molecules and their correct names to discover IUPAC naming conventions. There is also an accompanying assignment after. This will generally take 2 classes to get throught the posters and accompanying worksheet and then one more class to get through the assignment. I have had some bright classes finish everything in two periods. Split the class into small groups of 3-5 students. Hand o
Includes an activity with 5 tasks to learn about ionic and covalent compounds. I have also thrown in three extra worksheets I use for learning naming of compounds that work great for kids who missed class as there are links to you tube videos that teach the concepts. “You guys are so smart you don’t even need me to teach you this! You could figure it all out yourselves… so that is what we are going to do today!” Divide the class into small groups (2-4 people). Each group is given one task at a
In this activity students go from station to station (6 stations) solving a puzzle from the periodic table that describes a classroom expectation. Each station also has a periodic table scavenger hunt question and a discussion / get to know you question. Students then create their own puzzle with another expectation they think should be added. Also includes printouts of the elements that make up the expectations in Google Slides. Print them off on coloured paper to post class expectations in
Take your students outside near the end of the year to do some review while getting fresh air! Each group gets a camera (or phone) and takes pictures of things from the 4 Science 9 units. There is a compact checklist they can take with them while outside and a larger digital worksheet to insert the photos onto when they get back to the classroom.
