Making Maths Reason-able

This resource uses ten-frames to show 2-digit numbers as a number of full tens and a number of ones (not enough to make another full ten). Students can match the cards face up to learn the structure of 2-digit numbers or play a game with them face down looking for pairs for consolidation or as a small group activity/math centre. Suggest ten frame cards are copied onto one colour paper and the numbers onto another to facilitate the matching game.

This product includes two representations of decimals between 0 and 1. The number is on one set of cards and an area model of the tenths or hundredths. Suggest asking students to order the picture cards, then put them in a pile in order. Then order the number cards (most will do this incorrectly) and then put the picture cards back beside them and see if they match.. then challenge them to reorder the number cards as the pictures are probably correct. Students need to match the equation that represents the story, not try to find an equation that works out the answer. Focus is on the START, ACTION (joining equal groups - multiplication or separating a total into equal groups - division) and the END. The unknown therefore can be any of these three.

These posters of the numbers 0-20 are designed to reflect the structure of our place value system by positioning the full ten that represents the Tens to the left of the partly filled frame that represents the Ones. This file is in colour ... yes I'm Aussie :) . There is another file in my store that is black & white so if you can't print in colour it will print more clearly. Colours for the numbers with the same digit in the Ones place match for greater emphasis of the same number of ones.

This is a simple game that can be used to reinforce knowledge of Near Double addition basic facts. Students choose a card with a ten frame that shows a near double fact e.g. 4 dots on one side and 5 on the other (making 9 in total). Students match this image with the matching addition representation for the fact in the ten frame e.g. 4+5 on the game-board.There is no need to work out answers to the facts. This game just connects the near double image with the addition basic fact format. Students

This simple game reinforces seeing doubles being two collections of the same quantity. In this game students select a card that shows a ten frame where the dots are arranged in pairs (doubles). Students identify the total number of dots on their card and place their counter on a space with the matching number on the game-board. Students work in pairs to try to be the first to get three of their counters in a row on the game-board.

This game practises the concept that 2-digit numbers consist of a number of tens and a number of ones. Students choose two cards, one shows a number of full ten-frames (the tens) and the other shows a partially full ten-frame (the ones). They identify which 2-digit number they have represented and find it on the game board in numeral format. The game is simple and effective for students to see the number of tens and number of ones.

Students match 2 cards that show the same 1-digit addition represented using ten-frames. One set of cards has 9+ a 1-digit number and the other set of cards has 10 + 1-digit numbers. Students find the pairs of cards e.g. 9+6 will match the picture of 10+5. There are 2x10 cards in the game. Recommendation: Copy each set of cards onto a different colour paper before laminating to help students find the pairs more easily.

This kit contains 2 game boards and resources to pay 6 different games to practise subitising Nos 1-6 and Nos 1-10 using dice, dot cards (provided) and ten-frames (provided). Students choose a card or roll a die and place a counter on the matching number. Aim is to get 3 of their counters in a row. Good activity for consolidation or for Maths centres.
