Use this Interactive Notebook insert with step by step instructions to teach students how to estimate decimal quotients. This insert provides a step by step guide on both 1 digit and 2 digit divisors. Then, let students try for themselves on the "You Try!" Section. This is a difficult concept to waste, so having explicit instructions on how to solve these problems has proven to be helpful to them.

This is my FAVORITE resource I have created EVER! I send out an email to my parents and asked if anyone worked in the medical field and would be wiling to donate some supplies to our classroom for an activity. I got latex gloves (Check for latex allergies!), masks, hats, coats, and booties. I grouped the desks and filled syringes with blood (food coloring) and borrowed some stethoscopes for decoration. I placed pencils on a desk covered with aluminum foil for the surgical "tools" as a "tray".

What is better than providing real-life, authentic learning? Students will use the Logan's Roadhouse menu (which can easily be downloaded from their website) to estimate quotients and find exact quotients for both 1 and 2-digit divisors. This activity is highly engaging and students love the real-life connection this activity produces.

This foldable needs to be copied front and back and cut in half for students to glue in their Interactive Math NB's. This aligns with Go Math! Chapter 3 Lesson 3.7 and 5.NBT.7. Have students place a strip of glue on the vertical tab and use this as a reference for estimating decimals sums and differences.

This skill seems to be so difficult for my students every year. I have found that exposing them to all of the ways in which a remainder may be interpreted and then providing them of examples of each, has been meaningful. This aligns with Go Math! Grade 5 Chapter 3 Lessons 3.8 and 3.9 and CC.5.NBT.7. I project this flowchart on my document camera and fill in the chart with students. Enjoy!
