About the store
Currently, I am working as a Math Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Texas. I taught middle school math for 12 years, and have been developing my own curriculum for the past 6 years. I began my teaching career when I joined Teach For America in 2006, and was placed at a middle school in Liberty City Miami. While I taught in beautiful Miami for 3 years, I began leading professional development sessions centered around teaching middle grades math. In 2009, I moved to Chicago to teach at a small charter school on the Southside of the city. During my two years in Chicago, I worked under an amazing leadership team, and was able to really hone my craft of teaching. I began placing a strong emphasis on teaching my students to develop a deep conceptual understanding of the content, and in turn saw my student's achievement sky rocket above many of their more affluent peers. I taught in Atlanta for 7 years now, and have had the opportunity to teach several classes of gifted students each year. This experience has allowed me to develop curriculum that is extremely rigorous and engaging. I take a lot of pride in the curriculum I've created over this time.

This is a resource that is intended for teachers to use to teach students the meaning of multiplication and division of positive and negative fractions. Rather than simply giving students the procedure for how to multiply and divide fractions, this resource allows students to see the meaning behind the process. The first four pages are not independent work, and should be led by a teacher. The last two pages can be given as independent work. - Helps build understanding by relating to what stud

Teaching students about division with fractions can be tricky, especially if you want them to have a deep conceptual understanding of the process. This power point starts by activating students prior knowledge of division, then introduces students to dividing by a unit fraction by using bar models. Word problems are introduced at the end, and students are able to use a bar model to solve them. Students will be asked questions in a variety of different ways to ensure understanding. **Pl

Students will gain an understanding of the process of dividing fractions. The ppt starts with whole numbers, then moves to a whole number being divided by a fraction, then a fraction being divided by another fraction. Students will discover that dividing is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal. Each slide has multiple elements that will be exposed as you are ready to talk about that part of the problem.

Awesome game that allows students to practice identifying equivalent ratios. Students will be so engaged in this game, that they will forget they are practicing math. Great for building strategy skills as well. Directions: Connect boxes that contain equivalent ratios and highlight or color them with your given color. Boxes that are vertical horizontal or diagonal can be connected, and you can connect as many boxes as possible. Your opponent will check your answer. If it is correct, you earn al

Students will work in groups of 2-4. During this game, students will practice adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers as well as finding the mean, median, and range of rational numbers. Students will cut out the spinner, and operation cube, and will put both of these together before playing. The first player will spin the spinner, which will tell them how many rational number number cards to pick, and what to do with the cards. This game is great for reinforcing compu

Teaching style

It is my philosophy to teach students to understand math through exploration and discovery. Once students have a basic understanding of a concept, it is my job to lead them to make connections and develop an understanding of the reasons behind the concepts.

Additional biographical information

After attending a math and science conference in Houston in 2008, my philosophy of math education has changed. Since that conference, I have learned to teach my students to understand the meaning behind the mathematical concepts they are learning. I no longer teach easy tricks that can be used to solve mathematical problems, and now lead students to see the hows and whys of each concept.
