Stock Market Project with The Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen (Graphing Data)

This stock market project packet is to be used with the book The Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. This is always a favorite for my students. Not only are the kids engaged with the Read Aloud, students really enjoy picking a stock of their choice and diversifying $10,000 to create a portfolio. After collecting 5 days worth of data, they evaluate their portfolio to determine if any capital gains were made. Included in this purchase are step by step directions on how I use this when I teach it, along with

The Lawn Boy Read Aloud by Gary Paulsen PowerPoint Math Questions

This PowerPoint file is to be used with the read aloud book The Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. It is a great book that introduces the stock market (I use this PowerPoint file in whole group and print off slides to take for a grade). Some we do together and some we will just give as a pop quiz unannounced. I take the book a step farther and make an entire stock market, portfolio, line graph unit. Students purchase a stock of their choice with $10,000 (the remaining balance goes into a low risk saving

Get to Know Me Math Bar Graph Activity Day 1

This is a good way to introduce graphing and data collection while getting to know your class and the students within without "wasting a day". Students can start to learn x and y axis, scales/intervals, labels, and also info about their classmates. Students can survey the class and get creative as long as the survey question has 3 clear answer choices. I always print a hardcopy for students (4 PP slides into a front/back worksheet). The download is a PowerPoint file in which teachers first can m

Graphing, Mixed Number Computation, Rotations, Symmetry, Volume, Surface Area

This is a review worksheet intended for end of the year assessment practice at the upper elementary/intermediate level math students. After these skills have been taught, it is essential for students to constantly review past concepts so they can not only remember what has been taught, but it significantly improves one's confidence too!

Teaching style

Never let the brain stop working. Stimulating the brain is most important. Constant review is always spiraled in lessons everyday. I use these worksheets and Power Points daily and frequently pop quiz to hold students accountable. All students are always randomly called on to keep them honest and engaged 3-4 times per class when whole group instruction is used; independent work time and small group instruction to rep out math problems are critical to do each day. Students are expected to work as the expectations are set high; it can be a culture shock to start the year, but students show great growth.
