This activity is great for practicing simplifying variable expressions. All problems include the variables of m, a, t and h (you may want to point out to students that the 't' has a slight curl at the bottom compared to an addition symbol). To go further with this activity, you can then have students create and simplify similar problems involving the letters of their name, the name of your school, their favorite color/sports team/musical artist, etc...
This is the perfect assignment to use after first introducing the Order of Operations. Includes problems where students make mistakes by breaking the Order of Operations. Some of these problems could lead to good discussions about common wrong answers the next day in class. Great opportunity to use the document camera to display student work.
