The National Science Foundation posted a set of tools for students to explore Afrofuturism. This project prompts students to define afrofuturism, learn how to use the software to create their own afrofuturistic designs, and create a braid using the CSDT (Culturally Situated Design Tools) provided by the NSF located here: https://csdt.org/culture/scifi/index.html The assignment is in a Google Slides presentation that can be assigned in Google Classroom. Three journal prompts to ask students about their mathematical journal. The budding mathematician journal prompt can be assigned at the beginning and end of the year to help students track their development in their mathematical identity, a great back to school activity. The other journal prompts can be used at key points in the curriculum to help them connect topics and discuss their mastery of a topic. These check ins would be ideal for self-paced learners in mathematics classrooms.

About the store

Experience

I'm currently teaching and tutoring math online. I have been teaching and tutoring since 2012. I have a tutoring business called Math Aunty where I offer virtual one on one tutoring.

Teaching style

My teaching style is relaxed and informal. I focus more on creating a comfortable learning environment and connecting with student interests to create a positive math experience. I try to bring in Black and African American history and culture when possible. Most of my activities shared here align with my goal to get more culturally based math activities in the hands of educators everywhere.

My own education history

M.S. Mathematics, Kansas State University B.A. Mathematics, St. Mary's College of Maryland

Additional biographical information

I firmly stand behind my belief that every person has the potential to be a mathematician. I am spreading this message to students and parents through teaching and tutoring while spreading this message to fellow math educators through enriching professional development. A math tutor provides knowledge for a moment, but a math aunty provides knowledge for a lifetime. I take care to highlight the problem-solving strategies we are using and how they can be applied to things that interest the student. I also love sharing life lessons through storytelling and garnered the affectionate name of “Aunty Miss D” in the classroom for my skills in mediation, bringing music to the classroom, being corny, and creating a family atmosphere.
